Terms of Service

1. Agreement

These Terms of Service ("Terms") form a binding agreement between you and TrueNorth API. By creating an account, obtaining an API key, or using the TrueNorth API, you agree to these Terms. If you are using the service on behalf of a company, you confirm you have authority to bind that company.

2. The service

TrueNorth API provides developer tools for Canadian commerce: sales-tax calculation (GST, PST, HST, QST) across Canada's provinces and territories, product tax-category classification, Canadian address validation, and postal-code shipping checks. TrueNorth API may add, change, or retire endpoints over time; material changes will be announced on the site or by email.

3. Accounts and API keys

You need an account and an API key to call the API. You are responsible for everything done with your keys, so keep them secret, rotate them if they may be exposed, and never embed a live key in client-side code or public repositories. You must provide accurate account information and keep it up to date.

4. Plans, quotas, and billing

Current plans: Free (10 API calls per day), Pro ($19 CAD per month, 10,000 calls per month), Scale ($49 CAD per month, 100,000 calls per month). Calls beyond your quota are rejected until the quota resets. Paid plans are billed monthly in advance through its payment processor (Stripe). You can cancel anytime from your dashboard; paid access continues until the end of the current billing period and is not prorated or refunded. Prices are in Canadian dollars and exclude applicable taxes.

5. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

• Use the service for any unlawful purpose.
• Attempt to breach, probe, or circumvent the service's security, quotas, or access controls.
• Resell standalone access to the API or misrepresent the service as your own. (Building it into your own products and checkouts is welcome.)
• Submit content you have no right to share, or use the service to harm others.

TrueNorth API may suspend or terminate accounts that abuse the service, exceed quotas through circumvention, or fail to pay.

6. Tax data disclaimer, please read carefully

Tax rules change, and edge cases exist in every province. The API's calculations and classifications are estimates based on TrueNorth API's reading of published federal and provincial rules. They are not tax advice.

7. Availability

TrueNorth API works to keep the API reliable, but does not guarantee uninterrupted or error-free operation. Planned maintenance and rare outages happen; the status of paid-plan service levels, if any are published, is described on the site.

8. Termination

You may close your account at any time. TrueNorth API may suspend or terminate your access for violation of these Terms, abuse, or non-payment, with or without notice where the law allows. On termination, your right to use the API ends immediately.

9. Changes to these Terms

TrueNorth API may update these Terms as the service evolves. Material changes will be announced on the site or by email at least 14 days before they take effect. Continuing to use the service after changes take effect means you accept them.
